Its reading is a total experience. You lose contact with the present but not with reality, which still remains the privileged territory of the story. Harry is a character who, if he doesn’t identify with, we seem to have met him at least once in his life.
For those who love fantasy, a short guide to find out more, and a contest that rewards the best new writers.
No wonder it has become the most read saga in the world. Even Miranda Priestley asks her assistant to punish her for an unedited copy of Rowling’s next book manuscript. Harry Potter is the most incredible story that has ever been written. Incredible not because it is inconsistent but because it contains all the narrative elements that make a story a universal story.
Imagine the school. That bothered you when you went there. Imagine a school where you would like to plant roots instead. A school where you teach yourself to be yourself. Where you can learn all the tricks to live freely. To express yourself. Who did not want it. I think every day, before Rowling’s novel, we wanted to go to Hogwarts. The difference is that J. K. Rowling invented it. We, before, we limited ourselves to imagining it.
Harry is all the characters of the childhood world and beyond. Harry is Calimero, alone and misunderstood. Harry is Alice, bewildered in search of her role in the world. Harry is Pinocchio but instead of telling lies, he disappears. Harry is the abandoned child of the Dickens novels. Harry is one of us. A character in which if you do not identify with, we seem to have met him at least once in our life.
Nottempo, invisible cloak, muggle, magic cauldron. We all have a secret language. Animals have it, even plants. Inventing a language, creating unique terms that then become commonly used, but only for those who share that story, is a sign of great narrative capacity. Literary alphabeticization is what allows one story among many to become an unforgettable story (for better or for worse).
REALITY AND FICTION
In this fantasy is unbeatable, including the Harry Potter saga. His reading is a total experience. You lose contact with the present but not with reality which still remains the privileged territory of the story. One has the feeling of having experienced Harry’s emotions with the knowledge that they cannot be experienced.
Harry Potter is a Pandora’s box when it comes to literary quotes. Inside there is everything. There is Bulgakov, there is Shakespeare, there is Greek mythology. There is everything that those who love to read know without, apparently, recognizing it in the narration.
