The inheritance games: plot, review, characters | Jennifer Lynn Barnes

Don’t miss this New York Times bestseller, “Impossible to Miss” (Huffpost) bestseller with explosive twists, juicy revelations and high stakes – perfect for readers of Dark Secrets and Other Stories. A former teenage athlete turned lawyer, Avery Gulzar lives an incredibly simple life in New York but hopes to win the lottery in order to buy the biggest house in town. His best friend and assistant, Sienna Guillory, knows about the lottery but she doesn’t know how to help him. When she decides to investigate the lottery program for Gilead, an agent assigned to help with lottery problems, she makes a shocking discovery that sends her friend him deeper into the world of crime and intrigue.

With shocking discoveries at every stage of the investigation, The Inheritance Games delves deep into the complicated world of the lottery and Avery’s dark past. Fans of the lottery game will love this gritty sci-fi thriller, winner of the 2021 Academy Award for Best Screenplay. This is a must read book for anyone who loves playing the lottery and wants to know all the details about how the game is set up.

I enjoyed reading the engaging stories told by the main characters – Avery, Sienna and Damon. These three young men are the perfect heroes of the book. They are intelligent, daring, resourceful – all characteristics necessary for a successful gambler. The Inheritance Games is fun from start to finish, with short chapters that keep the story exciting from start to finish. The book is filled with excellent language that makes the reader want the next installment.

The game – called the Lotto-rate – has been around for generations in the form of the Rummy sweepstakes. In the film, the game takes a new turn when a family is killed in their home during a match. This tragedy pushes his older brother, Damon, to create a whole alternate reality in which the family never existed. From there, Damon plans the perfect heist that he hopes will make him the millionaire he can only dream of.

When the family learns the game exists – and the fact that Damon is the creator of it – they are over the moon. They are ready to do almost anything to get their younger brother – Damon – the reward they want. But Damon doesn’t want to take the risk. He and his brother find themselves stuck in the middle of nowhere, with no way out. They meet an old man, Sid, who comes to their rescue, but his presence causes other problems for the brothers.

The novel is full of descriptions of Maine’s woods and its nightlife. I particularly loved telling the story from Damon and Sienna’s point of view. The descriptions of the food that Damon finds (so good that he wants to eat it all) and the conversation he has with a local girl are a lot of fun. Damon also has a crush on Sienna, so it feels like the romance is as heartfelt as the game itself. I particularly liked the way the author wrote about the high stakes, the pressure of victory and the fact that Damon always seems to be right about something. He seems to have a knack for predicting what players will do at certain points in the game.

If you like detective novels with a little twist, then Inheritance Games is for you. It’s fast paced, makes you guess, and most importantly, it’s a great read. If you haven’t read the book, it would be a great place to start. You could also borrow it and read it from start to finish – I did.

I would recommend the book to people who like to think outside the box. The Inheritance Games isn’t like any other game – it’s set in an alternate version of our real world, the Golden Age, before it was all invented. And this is only the beginning of the twists. So if you don’t like thinking outside the box, this book may not be for you. But if you are, then The Inheritance Games is definitely worth a read.
