“The Darkest Minds” is an American dystopian science fiction film directed by Jennifer Yuh Nelson.
The story is based on Alexandra Bracken’s novel of the same name for young adults. The basic plot follows a group of teenagers on the run from the government, who have mysteriously received superpowers.
Although the film wasn’t very well received by critics, it managed to make a profit, bringing in $ 41.1 million worldwide, against a budget of around $ 30 million. Plus, fans of the books loved it and want more of it.
It’s entirely possible for “The Darkest Minds” to get a sequel as there is more source material to work with. Bracken’s series has more books besides “The Darkest Minds”, including “Never Fade” and “In the Afterlight”.
The author also has three other short stories, which shed light on the series, which can be found in “Through the Dark”. Plus, with the popularity of science fiction for young adults and the director herself hinting at her desire to return to the characters, we can in all likelihood expect a sequel to “The Darkest Minds” somewhere along the way.
The Darkest Minds 2 – Overview
Of course, you may be wondering what the sequel to “The Darkest Minds” might be about.
As for Jennifer Yuh Nelson, she made it known that no punches were being thrown for the first film and delivered the best film possible.
Therefore, it is unlikely that the sequel to “The Darkest Minds” will still deal with the source material of the first book. In fact, the story is likely to be based on the source material of “Never Fade,” the second novel in the series.
As we proceed to introduce you to the story of “Never Fade”, you should keep in mind that Bracken herself said that once her book becomes a movie, several people step in, express their opinions.
This leads to a lot of beautification and optimization. Therefore, in the event that “Never Fade” is made into the sequel film, the plot details may be slightly different from what we describe below.
However, we’ll see Ruby, our orange-eyed mind-controlling teenager, return to the story.
Although she never asked for the skills that nearly cost her a lot, she has now come to depend on them, using them in missions to take down the corrupt government (which hunts down super-powered orange-eyed and red-eyed children) and break into minds of his enemies.
Despite being considered a leader by the other kids in the Children’s League, Ruby believes she is a monster. Soon, she is entrusted with a dangerous secret that forces her to embark on a deadly mission, leaving the Children’s League behind.
There appears to be crucial information about the disease that wiped out most American children and gave other superpowers in the first place. Although the information appears to have survived any attempt to destroy it, it exists on a USB stick that lies in the hands of Liam Stewart, Ruby’s crush from the first film.
Although Ruby believed he was her future, Liam wouldn’t recognize Ruby in her current state. However, he sets out across the lawless lands, hoping to find him. To get to the truth about the catastrophe that devastated Ruby’s entire life, and the whole of America, he must choose between his old friends and the promise he made to the League.
Ruby is willing to do anything to protect the people she loves, but there is a chance that winning the war means losing herself.
In case you are wondering if Chubs, the much needed comic relief in the intense story, will be back, we have answers for that too. Though Chubs was apparently shot at the end of “The Dark Minds,” the film doesn’t show him dying.
Also, in “Never Fade,” Chubs plays a big role in moving the plot forward, so the sequel will likely begin by showing how Chubs is saved, before moving on to the intriguing plot.
The Darkest Minds 2 Cast: Who Can There Be?
In the event that there is a sequel to “The Darkest Minds”, it’s pretty easy to know which cast members are most likely to return and be in the film. The characters from “The Darkest Minds” who also appear in the sequel are Ruby Daly, Liam Stewart, Clancy Gray and Chubs.
So it’s likely we’ll see Amandla Stenberg, Harris Dickinson, Patrick Gibson and Skylan Brooks reprise their roles. Of course, there are many new characters that will be introduced in the sequel, and the cast will increase as new actors come to play these roles.
“The Darkest Minds” was directed by Jennifer Yuh Nelson, who has already made it clear that she would jump at the opportunity to make another film. He expressed how he loved the characters and how much the actors got out of being together on set.
The director said that, because they were good friends, he couldn’t wait to get back together. Therefore, in the event of a sequel, Yuh Nelson will definitely be on board. Chad Hodge may also return as a screenwriter, but beyond that, we can’t be sure at this point.
The Darkest Minds 2 release date
“The Darkest Minds” was released on August 3, 2018. However, 20th Century Fox bought the rights to the film in 2014. The entire project took four years to complete.
Since the rights to “Never Fade” have not yet been acquired, the first we can expect a sequel to “The Darkest Minds” is in 2022 or 2023.
Of course, once the project is underway, the casting shouldn’t be the first time, since some of the cast members are expected to return in the sequel.
