Is our IQ getting lower?

According to some research, the average IQ is in sharp decline and the causes are attributable to the change in education, educational models, and the rise of a society that shows models of easy access to success by reducing reasoning skills, creativity and problem-solving. But is this really the case?

The term IQ has become commonplace and more and more often poorly verified news is depopulated on the web with respect to its nature and the possible influence of particular lifestyles and behaviors. Among experts, it is defined as the relationship between mental age and age chronological (multiplied by 100) and indicates the cognitive level of an individual with respect to average parameters, therefore the level of intelligence.
It is a basically stable characteristic over the course of life, although it is affected by living conditions, stimuli, experiences, family context, and other factors. In addition to the study of changes in intelligence levels over the course of life, scholars have wondered what happens in the passages generational, with very different results over time. We can say opposites.

IQ and Flynn Effect

The New Zealander James R. Flynn in a study conducted in the 1980s showed that in the first half of the last century there was a steady increase in the average IQ levels in the population. This effect, called the “Flynn Effect”, countered the popular tendency to think of the new generations as less intelligent than the previous ones. This increase sees the growth of 3-4 points every ten years to a peak of 8 points in the Nordic countries. by the scholar, they were an improvement in lifestyle, levels of education, better nutrition and therefore well-being, a smaller number of families which allowed greater attention to the education of children and other factors of a social nature and well-being. Subsequent research even went so far as to attribute merit to new technologies and computerization systems. Greater stimulation and the possibility of quickly accessing information seem to increase knowledge but also the capacity for reasoning and discrimination of concepts, planning, organization, decision making, and creativity. All components of intelligence. The encouraging data suggest an exponential and constant increase in intelligence over time. But is it really so?

IQ: Flynn Effect and the End of Upward Flight

The exponential increase in intelligence levels seems to have already ceased, on the contrary witnessing a decline in average levels over the last few generations, confirming what other research had already stated in a study conducted in Norway by Bratsberga and Rogeberga (2018). The researchers evaluated the IQ levels of 730,000 military 18- and 19-year-olds by dividing those born before 1975 and those after, and observing a drop of at least seven points in the IQ in boys born in the second period. ‘internal of single families where according to the studies of the German universities of Leipzig and Meinz (and published in PNAS), minor children show lower levels of intelligence, therefore it is possible to hypothesize that there are not only genetic and immigration causes at the base of this reduction. Differently from what other scholars have noted, the increase highlighted by Flynn is partly questioned and partly considered the result of factors of cultural and lifestyle change that have impacted education, reasoning skills, and intellectual functioning. general which, however, like any novelty, has diminished and stabilized over time.

IQ: Anti-Flynn Effect

According to Norwegian researchers, the underlying causes of the collapse in IQ levels are a consequence of the change in lifestyle which sees a change in educational models and educational institutions, a change in the family context, and a preference for videogames to read In fact, most videogames do not allow a real fielding of reasoning and problem-solving processes to reach the solution but simple memorization of correct answers for continuous attempts and possibilities. In short, they do not favor the development of thought like reading. To increase the difficulties, the increasingly frenetic rhythms of today’s society that reduce parental attention to the education of children. Less variety of stimuli that favor the deployment of reasoning skills, planning, organization, manipulation of different material, fatigue, and the possibility of making mistakes and then looking for a solution, reduce the development of fundamental intellectual skills. also refer to the intelligence tests used, perhaps not very suitable for grasping the salient aspects of the intellectual functioning of the new generations and modern times. Today, in fact, what is defined as “fluid intelligence”, capable of finding new connections between elements, is taking hold, use the material creatively and move quickly from one system to another in order to adapt to a constantly changing reality. A little bit of what is allowed on the web where you have a quick superficial exploration of reality to capture the necessary information. All this is hardly observable directly from the intellectual tests and therefore a change in the way of interpreting them and in the use of data should be applied. going beyond the number, so it is good to ask ourselves if the IQ is really decreasing or if only a change in cognitive functioning is taking place that intelligence tests but also society is not yet able to grasp and perhaps not even accept.
